Gabriel Gillette, BS Ag ‘75
2006 Regional Tiger Pride

Humble and selfless, Gabriel Gillette shies away from recognition for his volunteerism. However, his nominator, Kellie Ann Christie, describes him as the “glue that holds the Memphis/Mid - South Chapter together.”

Although Gabriel is an Advanced Placement Chemistry and Physics teacher at West Memphis High School and works with kids every day, he also continues that focus in many of his volunteer efforts.

For his chapter, Gabriel heads up the annual scholarship award process. By evaluating each application and carefully reading each essay, he saves the chapter board time and effort when it comes to selecting the most qualified recipient. He also represents the Chapter at local student recruitment events. If anyone misses his passion for MU, all they have to do is look in his classroom, where he proudly displays the Chapter's Capstone Column award!

In addition, Gabriel, leads the chapter's charitable campaign to collect outer wear for the “Coats for Kids” project. He personally cleans and repairs each jacket and never seeks recognition for the hours he donates to this activity.

Gabriel is a dedicated member of the Chapter's executive board. Regardless of the chapter event, he is the first to arrive and the last to leave. He willingly uses “elbow grease” to ensure the event is a success.

Having been a life member of the Alumni Association for 20 years, Gabriel has demonstrated appreciation for the variety of ways the Association provides for alumni to stay connected to Mizzou. He shows this appreciation annually – or semi - annually! – by baking dozens of cookies and his famous rum cake and sending them to Columbia for the Alumni Staff to enjoy.

In addition, he works locally to help fellow grads in his teaching field connected with happenings both on campus and with the Memphis/Mid - South Chapter and encourages those who are not members to join the Association.

Commitment defines Gabriel. He never takes vacation from school and has been proud of his perfect attendance record at West Memphis High. However, last year he chose to break this record for Mizzou, when he attended his first Leaders Weekend.

Again this year, Gabriel chose Mizzou over his personal record and returned to campus.
