2004 Tiger Pride Award
Al Westland, BA ’45, of Memphis, Tennessee
Al
Westland is the Chapter historian,
but his nominator described him as
the ‘Chapter heart.” An
inspiring member of the Memphis-Mid
South Alumni Chapter, history has shown
there is no limit to his active love
for Mizzou.
When
younger members are slowing down, Al
is taking a new grad for a “pep
talk” breakfast. When some are
disappointed in the athletic scores,
Al can be seen sporting his gold jacket
and smiling at the chance to watch his
Tigers play.
He looks out for all Tigers in Memphis
and goes out of his way to garner support
for chapter projects. In addition to
making calls, writing letters or attending
meetings, Al will offer rides and rearrange
his schedule so another alum can attend
an event.
Although
he calls himself an “Aging
Tiger” few members see him that
way. Al and his wife, Pat, are often
seen demonstrating more exuberance for
MU than younger fans! Regardless of age,
race or background, Al finds common ground
to bring alumni together. He is a True
Son of Old Mizzou.
