Frequently Asked Questions (and answers!)

1. Do my parents have to be alumni for me to get an Alumni Scholarship?
   No. Scholars do not have to be related to alumni. Alumni Scholarships are not legacy scholarships.The Alumni Scholarship is different from the Mizzou Heritage Award. The Mizzou Heritage Award is an automatic scholarship from the University of Missouri. Candidates for this award MUST live out of state and have at least one parent who is a graduate of Mizzou.  For more information, CLICK HERE.
2. Why does the association offer scholarships?
   The purpose of the Alumni Scholar Program is to cultivate alumni volunteers for the future by recognizing their good scholarship and potential for leadership. Good scholarship provides a strong foundation for good leadership.
3. Is the Alumni Scholarship renewable?
   Some scholarships are renewable. Some are not. Each recipient receives a letter with details regarding how the scholarship will be paid and if it is renewable .
4. If I receive an Alumni Scholarship that is not renewable, can I reapply for one next year?
   Yes. The process is different for returning students. Returning MU students use the University Financial Aid Form and apply through the school or college in which they are enrolled.
5. Where does the money come from for the scholarships?
   Association scholarships are made possible through the allocation of membership dues. Chapter scholarships offered through this program are provided through local chapter fund-raising efforts.  
6. How is the money distributed to the students?
   The alumni association receives donations and has them deposited into each scholar’s account at MU. Generally, scholarships are divided into two payments, with half of the total being deposited into the account in the fall semester and the other half in the winter semester .
7. How are the Scholars selected?
   Scholars are selected by committees of volunteers.
8. When are applications due?
   Completed applications are due in the alumni association no later than Feb. 1, 2008. Note: This deadline has been extended from the previous deadline of Feb. 1.
