MAA Hosts "Fireside Chat"

On April 30, the Mizzou Alumni Association (MAA) teamed with MU Academic Retention Services, the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center and the Legion of Black Collegians to host a fireside chat at the Reynolds Alumni Center as a means of connecting students to successful alumni.

The event was the first of what promises to be many activities to come out of the MAA's recently launched "Engaging All Mizzou Alumni: A Plan for Diversity and Inclusiveness" initiative designed to increase involvement of underrepresented alumni populations.

On hand for the event were notable alumni including Jon Lawrence, Product Manager, Magellan Midstream Partners, L.C., Tulsa Alumni Chapter President and former MAA governing board member; Dr. Alisa Warren, Executive Director, Missouri Commission on Human Rights; and Councilman Jermaine Reed who represents Kansas City’s 3rd District.

After a brief opening and introductions by MAA Executive Director Todd McCubbin, each featured alumnus held table conversations with groups of students to share their experiences at Mizzou and field questions.

The evening concluded with a drawing for prizes including Mizzou apparel, a year of MAA membership and a $500 scholarship.
