MU Students Continue the Tradition of Painting the M

Painting the MMembers of the Class of 2013 gathered at Memorial Stadium on Friday to paint the rock M in the north end zone. More than 500 students gathered at the stadium to paint the rock M in preparation of the Mizzou football home opener in September. Students also assisted in repainting the word Mizzou on the south end zone bleachers.

MU students constructed the rock M in 1927 from leftover rocks from the building of Memorial Stadium, which opened a year earlier. The rock M is 90-feet wide and 95-feet high and is located in the middle of the hill beyond the north end zone.

In 1957, a group of pranksters changed the rock M to an N the night before the Missouri-Nebraska football game. A Mizzou groundskeeper, with the help of some students, restored the M to its proper form before kickoff. In exchange for their assistance, the students received free admission to the game. The next day, Missouri used a last-minute touchdown to post a come-from-behind win over the Huskers. The final score was 14-13.

The Mizzou Alumni Association is pleased to partner with the Office of New Student Programs and Mizzou Athletics in support of this freshman tradition. Click here to learn more about Mizzou traditions.
