With 14 buildings, six columns, 9,500 square feet of gardens, tons of history and memories, the Francis Quadrangle on the University of Missouri campus is one of Columbia, Missouri's most beloved icons. Come with us as we explore the traditions, relive the history and the tales of this historic landmark.

The Mizzou Alumni Association is proud to sponsor The Quad Project, a multimedia storytelling project developed for the Columbia Missourian and produced by students taking convergence reporting at the Missouri School of Journalism.

"Our goal was to tell some of the lesser-known stories about the buildings and events that are a part of Missouri’s historic Francis Quadrangle," Lynda Kraxberger, the convergence chair, said. "We hoped and were gratified to find real stories from people with a connection to both the landmark’s past and its present."

The project consists of 16 stories, all with historical information on Francis Quadrangle.

The stories include video, sound clips, photography, timelines and text to educate the viewer on such topics as Mizzou's botanical gardens, ghosts in the chancellor's home, Jesse Hall's gatekeeper, the Academic Hall fire, and many more.

We invite you to explore the history and heritage of the quad through the stories, photos and videos compiled by some very talented students and to post your own memories of the quad using the the link to the Quad Memory Gallery.

Project Credits:
Convergence chair, Lynda Kraxberger and
Missourian managing editor, Jeanne Abbott originally conceived the idea. Graduate teaching assistant, Derrick Ho designed and did the initial coding of the project while overseeing much of the planning and story development. Convergence faculty members Karen Mitchell and Amy Simons edited stories and were assisted in video production by graduate teaching assistant, Matthew Noonan.  Convergence major Chelsea Myers created the interactive map of the quad with links to individual stories. Frank Russell, Knight visiting editor at the Missourian, fine-tuned elements of the project from the copy desk at the Missourian.  Rob Weir, Director of Digital Development at the Missourian, made the whole project “go live” online.
