Faculty-Alumni Awards, begun by the Mizzou Alumni Association, recognize the achievements of faculty and alumni. Assistant, associate and full professors are considered for their work as teachers, researchers and administrators. Alumni are considered for both their accomplishments in professional life and service to their alma mater.

Established in 1960, the purpose of the Distinguished Faculty Award is to honor an outstanding member of the Faculty whose continued achievements have brought distinction to the faculty member and our University. It is awarded on the basis of the total accomplishments of the faculty member, with special emphasis on the faculty member’s relationships with students.

Established in 1956, the Distinguished Service Award is to honor outstanding service by an individual whose sustained efforts and support have added to the excellence of MU. These contributions have brought distinction to the honoree and to MU.

Distinguished Faculty Award Recipient

Jeremy F. Taylor

Curators’ Distinguished Professor of Animal Sciences and Genetics
Wurdack Chair in Animal Genomics, Division of Animal Sciences

An international leader in genomics, Taylor is a key player involved with the translation of next generation sequencing technologies, making DNA testing a reality for preventative medicine and the health of humans and animals. The Illumina GeneChip that Taylor’s team helped design revolutionized genetic improvement and genomics research so much so that the first chip is on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. He has received more than $43 million in research funding. His genomics research and graduate training program is considered one of the world’s best, and he has mentored 61 postdoctoral fellows, M.S. and Ph.D. students.  Along with his co-investigators and graduate students he has authored 224 peer-reviewed research articles, five book chapters, holds six patents and has edited one book. He joined the University of Missouri faculty in 2002.

•  Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2007
•  Received the USDA Secretary’s Honor Award in 2010
•  Received the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources 2011 Frederick B. Mumford Outstanding Faculty Member Award and the 2008 Celebration of Excellence Distinguished Researcher Award
•  Received the Rockefeller Prentice Memorial Award in Animal Breeding and Genetics in 2013
•  Member of the Missouri Quality Beef Team, awarded the NIFA Partnership Award for Mission Integration of Research, Education or Extension in 2013
•  Received the President’s Faculty Award for Sustained Career Excellence from the UM System in 2014

 

Distinguished Service Award Recipient

Jann Carl BJ ’82

Journalist, TV Host and Producer

A renowned journalist, Jann Carl BJ ’82 is the 2016 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. Currently based in Los Angeles but born in Carthage, Missouri, Carl began her journalism career after graduation in Chicago at the radio station WLS. Following a move to L.A., Carl served as a reporter and host for a magazine show at KABC. She was later selected as co-anchor of the program “News at Ten” for KTLA, where she worked for eight years and was awarded three Emmy. Carl then joined “Entertainment Tonight” as a senior correspondent and weekend anchor for 14 years. Her interview experience includes celebrities and newsmakers including Brad Pitt, Oprah Winfrey, Dan Rather, Steven Spielberg and Barack and Michelle Obama. Also in the realm of entertainment journalism, she has co-hosted ABC’s “Oscar Countdown,” the Emmy pre-show and the Tournament of Roses parade.

She is the founding partner of Yellville Productions, an independent television production company through which she has worked as a co-Executive Producer. Carl is the producer and co-host of Small Town, Big Deal. She has a clear passion for service as a champion of the Muscular Dystrophy Association for 24 years, which has presented Carl with the Directors’ Award and Paragon Award.
