Mizzou Alumni Association Privacy Statement

MAA logo

The most important function of the Mizzou Alumni Association (MAA) is keeping alumni connected to MU and to each other. Consequently, the MAA compiles both public and private information about all alumni, both members and non-members. This notice is to inform you of how we use the information we collect and how you can limit that use.

The MAA collects information about MU alumni from various sources:

  • information you send us, whether through correspondence, membership applications and renewals, e-mail, surveys, website registrations, etc.
  • information we receive from our affiliates
  • information we receive from Alumni Records, which is a matter of public record
Our database is for the sole use of MU. We do not sell, rent or trade alumni information with any organization that isn't directly affiliated with us.

MAA Affiliates

MU and the MAA work closely with MU schools and colleges, UM Healthcare, UM System, regional alumni chapters and affinity alumni groups (e.g., the MU Black Alumni Organization, Intercollegiate Athletics, etc.). We share information openly with these organizations.

The MAA has also formed relationships with companies to provide certain services to alumni and to generate revenue that helps finance some of the benefits and programs that the MAA provide. Before entering into a partnership with these companies, the MAA considers their business practices of the potential partners regarding the use of customer information. We have found our partners to be reputable, trustworthy organizations.

These companies communicate directly with alumni to market products and services on behalf of MAA. For that purpose, we provide them a list of names and addresses, with a detailed contract governing the list's use.

If you do not wish to be contacted by these companies, notify us at the address below. We will remove your name from the mailing lists we provide them. Please be aware that mailings are often prepared several weeks in advance of shipping. We will try to get your name out of circulation as quickly as possible, but you may receive mailings for more than a month after requesting removal.

What kind of electronic information does MAA collect?

When a user logs on to our Web site, www.mizzou.com, MAA's Web server automatically recognizes only the consumer's domain name (where possible), not the e-mail address. We collect e-mail addresses when users submit them, either through an address update form, correspondence or by listing them on application or registration forms. We also on occasion hire services that specialize in researching lost or missing e-mail addresses for alumni (these services send notices to alumni with addresses in the public domain notifying alumni of our intent to add their e-mail address to our database).

MAA maintains a list of e-mail addresses so that we may keep interested alumni informed about MAA and MU events. Therefore, we share e-mail addresses with regional alumni chapters, the Development office and we compile them for our electronic newsletter, @Mizzou. If you do not wish to receive @Mizzou or any other e-mail correspondence, you may opt out by sending an email to maa@mizzou.com.

The MAA’s site also collects aggregate information about which pages alumni access or visit and any other information volunteered by a user, such as survey responses. This helps us evaluate and improve our site, and it is solely for use within the association.

MAA does not sell, or trade e-mail addresses or other electronic alumni information with any other organization for any reason.

How Does MAA use contact information?

We use contact data to send you information about MAA (MIZZOU Magazine, chapter event notices, newsletters, etc) and promotional materials. Your contact information is also used to contact you when necessary. From time to time MU engages in telemarketing to raise funds, this is conducted through MU's Mizzou Annual Fund office or a vendor partner of MAA.
