True Tiger Online Network FAQ

What is the True Tiger Online Network?

  • True Tigers are student members of the Mizzou Alumni Association.
  • The Network is set up so that our True Tigers can have a way to connect with alumni to inquire about things from career advice to providing "local knowledge" for student wishing to move to a particular area.

What are the benefits of knowing a mentor?

  • To link or connect you with a professional that represents an occupation that you would like to pursue.
  • To provide you with career information that would help you to make more informed decisions about programs of study and occupations.
  • To help you find information about a particular city that you are interested in relocating to.

How do I find an alum?

Tips for True Tigers

  1. Once an alum has made contact, please make every effort to respond in a reasonable time.

  2. Please be prepared with your questions. Remember the alum is a volunteer and is giving his/her time for your benefit.

  3. Be friendly and sincere. Share your career goals and experiences.

  4. You may wish to continue your contact through e-mail, telephone, or personal/group meetings.

  5. Please remember the primary role of the Network is to provide information. It is not intended to be used as a network for job placement service.

Tips for Alumni

  1. Once a student has made contact, please make every effort to respond in a reasonable timeframe.

  2. Be friendly and sincere. Emphasize to your students that you have volunteered for the project and that you are really interested in them.

  3. Encourage the student to be open. Let them know when they can contact you. Have them share their goals and experiences.

  4. Some suggestions for local alumni/student contacts include meeting for coffee to chat and exchange calenders; if your work place allows, invite the student to attend a business meeting, or have him/her accompany you on the rounds; make a committment to e-mail or telephone on a regular basis.

  5. Recommend books or other resources that have been useful to you in your career.

  6. Be aware that the student may be undecided as to career goals, and is searching for information only related to your chosen profession. As such, their contact with you may be limited to that first meeting only.

  7. Your role is to provide the student with information. It is not to provide the student with job placement or other gratuities.
